LCA Competitions - General Rules

 1.

In order to play in any L.C.A. competition, with the exception of the Junior/Bantam Girls competitions, an entrant must be 18 years or over prior to the competition. L.C.A. dues must be paid by her Club.
In the event that the fees paid by a member in a Club cover both Day and Evening privileges, that member may choose to play as a member of a Day rink or an Evening rink in any L.C.A. competition, but may enter only once in any competition.
See By-Law XVI.1

 2.

A rink must have a complement of four players. However, a team may start with three players if the fourth is delayed. If a fourth player does not arrive, the game is deemed to be forfeited by the three-man team unless extenuating circumstances apply.

 3.

In any one game, in the event of illness or other extenuating circumstances, a rink may continue to play with three players. In succeeding games a replacement must be found and may play as the skip designates, but always within the rules of the specific competition. A substitute may be provided by the host club if necessary.

 4.

Only two players may be substituted on any rink. If a player is substituted for twice consecutively in any L.C.A. competition, she is no longer a member of the rink and cannot continue to play. If a spare is required for the final game of a competition, her name shall be listed with the winning club.

 5.

In the event of late arrival of a team, the rink shall lose one point and one end for each 15 minutes delay, and shall lose by default after one hour.

 6.

In the event of the late arrival of a team due to bad weather conditions, the game can be delayed up to thirty minutes without a penalty.

 7.

In the event that the winner of a Centre/District is unable to ice a complete rink (two substitutes only will be allowed), the runner-up rink from the Centre/District may replace the rink for the District/Championship playdowns.

 8.

Curlers who have participated in ten (10) or more games during a curling season have a year's curling experience when counting years curled. The same rule will apply for Junior curlers.

 9.

Warm-up time prior to L.C.A. events cannot be provided for in the majority of events. If time allows, it will be permitted at the discretion of the Chairperson of the event.

DUDLEY KERR - Juniors (5 years and under) - 1 rink
TED THOMPSON - Seniors - 1 rink

1(a)

(b)

Challenge Rounds: 8 ends - 2 rink competition from each club for Birks and 1 rink for Ted Thompson and Dudley Kerr - to be played on Challenger's ice.
Play-off Finals (Birks and Ted Thompson): 10 ends
2. Composite teams allowed providing the club pays the Challenge entry fee and is a member of the Ladies Curling Association.
3. All games scheduled for Thursday play, and usually take place in the morning. Prior play may be arranged upon agreement of both clubs.

 4.

The clubs shall play in order drawn.
 5. In case of default of defending club - this shall constitute a win for the Challenger (the home club) (also see the "Format")
 6. Default of the Challenging Club (home club) - the Defending Club shall play the next Challenger. This shall NOT constitute a win for the Defender.
 7. If a team is late they shall lose 1 point for each 15 minutes delay. If a team is more than one hour late, the Club loses by default.
 8. If defending club cannot get to challenger club due to storms, bad roads, etc., the game must be played before the next scheduled game. We are certain that all clubs will be cooperative in this matter. If there is absolutely no day agreeable to both that can be found, then the Challenger club wins by default.
 9. Prior to an 8-end Challenge Round game a ten-minute practice time is permitted for each team, timed from the release of the first practice rock. Rock colour shall be predetermined and practice shall take place on the sheet or sheets on which the game or games are to be played. The home team shall be the first to practice, starting 30 minutes before the scheduled start of the game, and the visiting team's practice shall commence immediately thereafter, approximately 20 minutes before the start of the game.
 10. If a team starts without its full complement on the ice, the first two players each deliver three stones each end. The 4th member of the team may join the game at any time.
 11. There is only one toss in a dual rink competition - the order of play is determined by the team making the toss, i.e., reversed on the second ice.
12. In a dual rink competition, both rinks should start and finish together and try to pace themselves, but no one should hold up a game in order that the other team catch up.
13. All eight ends must be played in Challenge rounds. In the event of a tie after eight ends, it must be broken by playing an extra end. If there is still a tie after an extra end, it must be broken by a draw to the button by any team member, with sweepers allowed, and broom may be held. After a measure the first rock thrown shall be removed from play.
14. With regard to two-rink entries (i.e. the Birks), if after eight ends there is a tie in total scores, and following the playing of an extra end there is still a tie, a time-out of a maximum of five minutes may be taken, during which each Club's eight curlers may confer to decide which member of their team is to throw the deciding rock, who will be the sweepers, and who will hold the broom. The curler from each Club who is to throw the tie-breaking rock may do so on the sheet on which she has just played. A coin toss will be made, with the winner making the choice of whether to throw first or last rock.
15. There shall be an umpire.
16. The host club shall provide a complimentary light lunch for competing curlers.

 17.

The winning Club of each Challenge shall notify the next club on the list to verify date and time of the scheduled game.

The club with the most wins in challenge play shall be the winner of the competition, or section of that competition. (See "Calculating the event or section winner" in the attached "Format", concerning rules for breaking ties.)

 19.

For the play-off finals in the Birks and Ted Thompson competitions, ten ends shall be played, with no practice time permitted, but otherwise shall subject to the same tie-breaking rules as given in 13 and 14 above.

PLEASE NOTE: The winning club must phone the results of each game to the LCA Challenge Trophy Chairperson, giving the total points and ends won for both teams, as soon as possible after the game. All scores must be in by 6:00 p.m. the day of play.
October 2010

FORMAT FOR CHALLENGE GAMES IN DISTRICT 1

The Draw

The Challenge Chairperson prepares the rotational challenge trophy games draw based on the following rules, and also sets dates for the games, endeavouring to avoid clashes of dates with other L.C.A. events.

(a) The new trophy holder becomes the Defender, and goes to the top of LEFT column.

(b) The last challenger on the previous year's list (i.e. the club appearing at the bottom right) now becomes the first challenger for the current year, and goes to the TOP RIGHT.

(c) The Club which had been the previous trophy holder (i.e. the club which had appeared at the top left the previous year) now becomes the last challenger and goes to the BOTTOM RIGHT.

If the same club wins in consecutive years, as defenders they remain at the top of the left column, but the club which had been the last challenger the previous year goes to the top right, as in (b) above.

Calculating the event or section winner

The event or section winner is the club with the greatest number of wins. However, at every game, the points score and number of ends won by both teams must be recorded and the information given to the Challenge Trophy Chairperson the same day. Only scores/ends prior to an extra end shall be counted; thereafter, one extra point only shall be awarded to the winner. This information is necessary in case, at the end of the season, there is a tie or ties in the number of games won, which will be resolved as follows.

(a) With regard to Item 5 of the Rules for District 1 Challenge Games, if a Challenging club is awarded a win because of default of the Defending club, when all games have been completed they shall be awarded the average of points and ends won by the other winning clubs in their competition.

(b) In competitions with only one section (i.e. the Dudley Kerr), the Club with the most wins will be the holder of the Trophy for the next year.

(c) If two or more clubs have the same number of wins, then the club with the highest total score is the winner.
(d) If two or more clubs have the same number of wins and also the same highest total score, then the club with the greatest differential in total score shall be the winner.

(e) If two or more clubs have the same number of wins, the same highest total score, and the same greatest differential in score, then the club with the greatest number of ends won shall be the winner.

In competitions with two sections (i.e. the Ted Thompson and the Birks), the method of defining the winner of each section shall be the same as given above. The Section Winners shall play off for the respective trophies in the morning at the club hosting the Awards Luncheon at the end of the curling season.

RULE CHANGES
(Beginning in September 2003)

CCA GENERAL RULES OF PLAY

FREE GUARD ZONE
The new rulebook adopts the four-rock rule, which states that any opponent's rock cannot be removed from play in the Free Guard Zone (FGZ) until the fifth shot of the end.
Another significant change in the Free Guard Zone Rules allows either team to remove their own stone from the Free Guard Zone at any time.

HOG LINE RULE
The new rulebook shows a change indicating that the throwing hand must be clearly free of the handle before the front edge of the rock reaches the front edge of the near hog line.

BACK LINE
The new rulebook shows that the back line is intersecting with the circles, which allows for a measure in the middle of an end to see if a rock is in play.

SWEEPING RULE
The new rulebook shows no change in the rule for sweeping behind the tee-line.
(The WCF has adopted the CCA version)

CCA RULES FOR OFFICIATED PLAY

DELIVERY STICK
The delivery stick will not be permitted for events leading to a sanctioned national or world championship.
